Bend Sampler

We took 5 days to camp and recreate in Bend, OR last week. It was a stressful trip, and we definitely didn't have a lot of downtime, but we had some fun anyway. Welcome to parenthood, right?! We learned some lessons too, that we'll take with us for our next vacation to make it more enjoyable.

One lesson we've learned from multiple trips is to travel shorter distances. Five hours to Bend was just about perfect, as we were able to make it within 9 hours, stopping to appease the unhappy baby traveller who prefers to move and not be strapped down.

"Um, why don't I sit here instead of that stupid carseat thing?"

We met up with Ed and Julie to camp at a state park the first night. The next morning, we all headed out to little Cultus Lake on the Cascade Lakes highway. Beautiful lake, nice camping, and some mountain biking right from camp. Ed, Julie, and I did a 25+ (?) mile ride from camp to Lemish Lake, to Charlton Lake, where we enjoyed lunch and a dip in the cool water, and then back to camp, where we cooled and cleaned off again in Cultus Lake.

That day, Brandon played with Kye at camp and took him 'swimming' in the lake. Kye sacked out on daddy's chest for his afternoon nap.

The next day, Brandon and Ed did a long ride, while Kye and I hung out in the shade at a park along the Deschutes river. When we got too hot (it was 95+), we went for a dip in the cool river, watching all the people floating by on tubes.

It was my turn the following day, and I rode some of the in-town trails, connecting Tiddlywinks to Storm King, to the Deschutes River Trail. Tiddlywinks and Storm King were both roly-poly, park-like trails, with lots of whoops and berms. They were enjoyable but I really liked adding on the Deschutes River Trail, as it was a tiny bit technical with beautiful views, some exposure, and lots of places to hop in and cool off.

We moved camp to Fawn Lake for the last couple of nights. Here, Kye enjoys a campside ride on daddy's shoulders.

Our last day, Brandon rode the Tumalo Falls to Mrazek trail with Ed & Julie.
